As the name itself gives you a brief answer right??Backlinks are links that are pointing towards a destination site from other websites called source sites.As the name suggests backlinks are links that are linked from other websites towards a particular site of similar content hence the name backlinks.
ex:-If you have a site about blogging with rich content then a similar website content owner may link to your site from his/her site.
Importance of backlinks:
Backlinks are very important for following reasons:

- Backlinks measures the quality of your website.
- Helps in increaseing your website organic traffic.
- Most importantly helps in increasing the rank of your site from search engines point of view.

Yes, the quality of backlinks you are getting plays a huge role in the ranking of your site.A quality backlink from a high reputed website do a lot more then 100's of backlinks from untrusted or low quality backlinks.Hence i recommend you try to improve the quality of backlinks you are getting but not the quantity of backlinks.Try to make backlinks in a natural way rather then getting through artifical way because in some cases search engines may penalize you.
It takes some time and patiencey to build some high quality backlinks in the meanwhile try to improve the quality of your content and keep posting rich web content which helps in building some good backlinks and also improves the organic traffic of your site.

This was one of the simplest way to build some backlinks.when you are visited a site of content that matches with your website content then try to give your comment and there by give your website link in comment.Try to give positive feedback/comment but not try to spam the comment.
How this method works:
When you visited a site we probably visit comments about topic.The same tip works fine here when viewing comments there is a chance that they might visit your website because your website matches with what they are looking.There by getting a free backlink.
Forum posting method:
Forum provides a simple way to link back to your own site.Try to answer the problems in forum post and then give your website details like for more information visit my site etc as per your wish and hence there by getting a link back to your site.
Asking other site owners:
By asking other website owners in a polite way may give you some backlinks.But before asking them try to give a link back to their site from your website and hence there are chances of getting backlinks.
Request website owners of similar content that your site possess.Doing this may help you in getting backlinks.
Guest blogging:
Guest blogging is also a new trend in getting backlinks which are quality ones.Just try to googleing for 'guest blogs' or 'submit guest blogs' to find sites that accepts guest bloggers that are similar to your site and give your html link there by getting backlinks.

The first and most important thing you know about the search engines are that they are not humans hence they are not able to see who is the man in pics,videos etc but the text content inside pics,videos like alt tags,title tags etc may help the search engines to find what the pages are about.But with the advanceing in the web and technology now a days search engines can feel the quality,smell,cool design and enjoy the movements in videos.Although the text content in the site can plays a major role in crawling,indexing and finding what the pages are about by the crawlers and hence displays them in the search for a particular query.
The steps involved in the search engine may consists of the steps like crawling,indexing,processing,calculating relevancy and retriveing.

First of all search engines crawl the websites you submitted to see/find the information of your content and what the pages are about.This task can be done by a piece of a software called crawler or spider(ex: google bot in case of google search engine).The spiders may follow from one link to another that comes up in their way and index all the sites/links through the crawling process.
There are over approximately 20 billion of webpages in the present web market hence it is not possible to the spider to crawl your pages when a new page was added or any changes made to the existing ones. sometimes it takes about 2 months or more for a spider to crawl your new pages,in some cases even more time.So please be patience and try to develop content for your site.
The next step was to index the pages that are crawled earlier.The pages that are crawled can be indexed in a huge database where they may be retrived later.The process of indexing was identifying the keywords,text etc presented in the pages and make them in a order or ranking them according to different factors like links etc.For humans this process was quite complex but the search engines may done the job very well.sometimes indexing was difficult for search engines because of bad designing etc so i recommend that try to improve the navigation of your site in order to get indexed by spiders and hence improves your performance in the search engines.
The next step was processing i.e displaying more relevant and quality results for a particular search.This can be done by compareing the pages in the database by measureing quality,backlinks etc and hence displaying them in the search results page.This is the reason why some sites are ranked higher than other sites.The process of displaying relevant results for a particular search may be different for different search engines like google,yahoo,bing etc hence there is a variation in results page of different search engines according to their own indexing process.
The next step behind displaying search results was retriveing pages this is very simple as it was nothing but to display the pages in the browser that were processed and indexed earlier.

For yahoo,bing:
The indexing process was similar in almost all search engines, there are still some small changes in indexing in different search engines.This may leads to large variations in different search engines performance.
Unlike google,yahoo and bing may give importance to on-page keyword factors which was quite opposite to that of google's indexing process.
Although if you implement good seo for your website/blog then definitely your site may perform well in almost all search engines.
